Our Approach to Therapy

Overview

Your Therapy Journey

Therapy offers a supportive, confidential space to explore what you’re experiencing and how you’d like things to change. People seek therapy for many reasons: to navigate stress, process difficult experiences, improve relationships, or better understand themselves. Our clinicians work collaboratively with you, tailoring the pace and focus of therapy to your needs, goals, and readiness.

Individual Therapy

Life can be complex, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed or unsure of how to move forward. Individual therapy offers a space where you can talk openly, without judgment, and with someone who is genuinely invested in understanding your experience. Whether you're navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, grief, trauma, relationship stress, or simply wanting to better understand yourself, therapy can help you create meaningful and sustainable change.

We’ll take the time to understand not just your symptoms, but your story. The patterns you’ve developed, the ways you’ve learned to cope, and the underlying needs that may not be getting met. You’ll have room to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with your strengths.

Your therapist will guide the process using approaches that may include Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Psychoanalysis and other evidence-based modalities, depending on what fits you best. The goal isn’t to “fix” you, but to help you understand yourself more deeply, soften the pain you’re carrying, and move toward a greater sense of clarity, resilience, and self-trust.

Couples Therapy

Relationships can bring joy, connection, and a sense of belonging. They can also become strained, especially when communication breaks down or old hurts start to resurface. Couples therapy offers a structured, respectful space where both partners can feel heard and supported.

Rather than focusing on who is “right” or “wrong,” we explore the deeper patterns that shape your interactions. Many couples feel stuck in cycles of conflict, distance, or misunderstanding. Together, we work to identify the emotional needs beneath those patterns, strengthen communication, rebuild trust, restore closeness, and help you feel like you’re truly on the same team again.

Whether you're navigating long-standing issues, adjusting to life transitions, recovering from a rupture, or simply wanting to strengthen your connection, couples therapy with a licenced and experienced therapist helps you create a relationship that feels more secure, responsive, and emotionally connected.

Family Therapy

Families are dynamic systems - when one person struggles, everyone feels it. We help families navigate challenges such as conflict, communication breakdowns, parenting concerns, major transitions, emotional or behavioural issues, or the stress of supporting a family member with mental health needs. Sessions are collaborative and respectful, ensuring each person’s voice is heard and valued.

Family therapy aims to improve understanding, reduce tension, and strengthen connection so that home feels like a more supportive and predictable place for everyone.

Therapy for First Responders, Veterans, and Military Personnel

First responders and military professionals often carry the impact of critical incidents, high-pressure environments, and repeated exposure to trauma. Over time, this can lead to burnout, irritability, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, sleep difficulties, or feeling disconnected from loved ones.

Our work with Veterans, active military, police, firefighters, paramedics, and other frontline professionals focuses on creating a safe, grounded space to process these experiences without judgment. We help you understand what you’re feeling, make sense of the cumulative stress of service, and restore the parts of yourself that may feel lost or worn down.

Therapy is collaborative and paced with care. Together, we work to reduce symptoms, strengthen resilience, improve relationships, and support a return to meaningful functioning, both on and off the job.

Virtual Therapy

We understand that everyone’s needs and circumstances are different, so we offer both in-person therapy and secure telehealth sessions. In-person services are available in our comfortable offices in Nanaimo or Victoria, or, if it’s more convenient, you can connect from home through encrypted video sessions.

Telehealth allows us to provide most of our therapy and assessment services remotely, giving you access to care even if you live outside our local areas or prefer the privacy and ease of online appointments. Our team uses secure, PIPA-compliant videoconferencing platforms designed specifically for clinical use, and many clients find virtual care just as effective and personal as in-office work. Telehealth services can be accessed from anywhere in British Columbia.

Many clinicians offer a combination of both in-person and telehealth, depending on what works best for you on any given day.

Our Professional Standards

All of our clinicians are registered, ethical, and accountable professionals who adhere to the highest standards of psychological care. Our Registered Psychologists are regulated by the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC), which sets strict requirements for competence, ethical practice, and public protection.

Our Registered Clinical Counsellors are members of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC), an organization that upholds rigorous standards for counselling practice and professional conduct.

Across our team, you can expect clinicians who are well-trained, accountable to their governing bodies, committed to ongoing education, and dedicated to providing care that is safe, respectful, and grounded in evidence-based practice.

Understanding Our Therapy Services

Is Therapy Right for Me Right Now?

Many people wonder whether therapy is the right step, or whether their concerns are “serious enough” to seek support. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Therapy can be helpful during periods of stress, transition, or uncertainty, as well as when you want to deepen self-understanding or strengthen relationships.

If you’re unsure whether therapy is appropriate or which type of support might be the best fit, our team can help guide you. You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out. Starting the conversation is often the first step.

Do I need a referral to start therapy?

No referral is required. You can contact us directly to book an appointment. However, if a third party is paying for your sessions, we may require something from them before we can schedule. Our team can help guide you through that process.

What can I expect in my first session?

Your first session focuses on understanding what brings you in, learning about your history and goals, and ensuring you feel comfortable with your clinician. You’re welcome to ask questions about the therapy process, your clinician’s training, or anything else you’re curious about.

How long are therapy sessions?

Most therapy sessions are 50 minutes. Some assessment or couple, family, or child sessions may be longer depending on clinical needs, but this will be discussed with you before booking.

How often will I need to come to therapy?

This varies from person to person. Many clients begin with weekly or bi-weekly sessions and adjust over time depending on progress, goals, and personal circumstances.

Do you work with insurance or third-party funding programs?

This varies from person to person. Yes. Our clinicians are covered by most extended health plans under Registered Psychologists or Registered Clinical Counsellors. We also work with several third-party funders such as Veterans Affairs, RCMP, ICBC, WorkSafeBC, CVAP, and many others. Coverage varies by provider, so we encourage you to confirm with your insurer.

How do I know which therapist is the right fit?

Finding the right therapist is important. We can help match you with someone based on your needs, preferences, and goals. You’re also welcome to switch clinicians at any time if you feel a different match would better support your therapy.

Is online therapy effective?

Yes. Research shows that telehealth therapy can be just as effective as in-person care. Many clients appreciate the flexibility, privacy, and convenience of online sessions.
